Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
